I was just having a read of a story in My Business Magazine. Believe it or not, this one was from a year ago, but the Mark Zuckerberg photo on the front got my attention. In fact, it says here, ‘Mark Zuckerberg’s Secrets to Success.’ And I thought I’d share those with you. He’s got the 5 P’s to his success. You think about a company like that, I don’t know what it’s worth now, but it’s worth a lot of money. And his 5 P's to success are very simple.
Here they are:
Keep your energy and your commitment fully charged at all times. That is about being passionate. You know, passion is a contagious thing. If you've got the energy and the drive and the enthusiasm, people see that in you. People want to be a part of that, they are magnetized to that. Even if you’re having the worst of worst days, you've still got to keep the passion real and remember why you’re doing what it is you do.
The next thing then, which is sort of to my mind aligned with passion, and that’s Purpose. Understand what your purpose is. What is it that you’re trying to achieve? It’s not just about creating a big company. It’s about the purpose of what your company’s there to do. For example, my company, which is a business coaching company, my purpose is to reduce the fatality rate. I’m talking about the business fatality rate. They say that 8 out of 10 small businesses go broke in the first five years. My purpose is to reduce that. I want less people to go broke. I want more people to be successful. So know what your purpose is.
The next 'P' out of his 5 Ps is People. If you’ve watched any of my other videos, you know I’m a fairly strong believer in building a strong team. My team will tell you, I tell them, ‘If you ever get up in the morning and you’re not excited about coming to work, come and let me know. Let me know that something’s getting you down. Let me know that your passion is drying up. Let me know that you need some help, some pushing, some motivation, some inspiration, whatever it might be.’ People drive your business. If you’ve got the right people, your business will just fly. So get the right people!
The fourth 'P' is Product. Make sure you’ve got a product that’s innovative, it’s on the edge. Think about it. It’s 2014 now, getting close to the end of the year. We’re just past the midyear, won’t take long for Christmas to be here. The reality is that technology is moving so fast. I still get business people that say to me, ‘Ben, do I need a website?’ Give yourself an uppercut, slap yourself. Yes, you need a website. Yes, you need to be on Facebook. Yes, you need a YouTube channel. Yes, you need to be on LinkedIn. Yes, you have to use online marketing as a tool. Yes, you need to have a database. You need to be on the cutting edge. Your product has to be cutting edge. It has to be innovative. You have to be continually impressing people with what it is that you do.
The fifth 'P' that he has is Partnerships. He says build powerful partnerships. And in this day and age, that’s a hugely powerful way to grow your business. People are starting to build networks that are huge. I think about just my LinkedIn profile, the connections I have, the amount of people I can reach. With partnerships you can do amazing things. And whilst I’m busy building my database, you might find somebody else that’s building their database. Or while I’m busy pursuing my purpose, someone else is doing something that’s closely aligned, and we can join forces and really drive the point forward.
So there’s his 5 P's
