Today, walking to the local café at lunch I passed a young woman sitting on the grass using a coin to scratch a ‘scratchie’.
She was using the coin in her hand rather feverishly and curious, I walked a little slower to subtly witness the outcome of her efforts. Within seconds, her hopeful face turned to clear and rather absolute disappointment.She hurriedly stood, roughly scooped up her things and walked off in a huff, presumably her lunch break was over and she was going back to work in not such mood.
I couldn’t help but feel rather sorry for this woman. She was pinning an awful lot of hope on a few randomly printed numbers on a card that she randomly purchased. All random…
Why would you leave making money to random chance?
She clearly had a desire for more money or she would not have been so disappointed when she didn’t win, in fact she would have unlikely have purchased the ticket in the first place.
So if the desire was there, why not put in the effort required to achieve her desires?
I am sure she is an intelligent woman capable of many things right now and what’s more, she is capable of learning and implementing new things to be better and therefore capable of even more. So why was this not where her focus and efforts lay?
Let’s not be hippies about this, money is unlikely to be the actual desire, unless she was like a cartoon I used to watch as a kid with a character called ‘Scrooge McDuck’. He had a pool full of money he leapt into and swam around in (I always thought would be rather painful!). So unless you’re Scrooge McDuck – you’ll need money to achieve the life you desire. To live the life you want, whatever that looks like.
So, as far as I can see, you have 2 choices; you can set clear financial goals, including a time-frame around achieving them (B), get clear on where your finances are now (A) and map a plan to get from A to B. Then of course you implement that plan. Focus on taking effective action to achieve your goals.
Or…
You can buy random scratchie tickets, with random numbers printed on a random card, in a random newsagency and hope you randomly scratch it!
Make a decision. Right now. To either achieve your desires the smart way or scratch yourself happy!
