Recently I was lucky enough to be interviewed on the very popular Small Business Big Marketing Podcast. If you are not familiar with this show, each week Timbo Reid interviews successful business owners who, in his words, are pumping out terrific marketing. These interviews are both inspirational and informative and help other business owners gain marketing ideas and insights on how they too might be able to achieve the level of success they are after.
I have been listening to the show for many years now and to have actually been interviewed, was personally very cool.
Reaching out to Timbo
I approached Timbo via email not that long ago after listening to one of his recent episodes in which he spoke to a good friend of mine, Dale Beaumont of Business Blueprint. It was during this episode that the importance of coaching was mentioned and the term ‘Business Coaching’ discussed. During the interview, the point that Business Coaching does have a bad taste with some people was raised which obviously I wanted to address.
I heard from Timbo not long after sending the email and after a little bit of communication, a date and time was organised. The interview itself was lots of fun and didn’t just focus around that of business coaching but also extended to marketing. Which was great as we both have a passion for marketing and Timbo’s listeners are obviously wanting to hear great marketing advice.
Discussing my Business Background
Timbo, obviously a seasoned vet at the whole interview and pod-casting scene asked lots of great questions. We started off speaking about my beginnings as a business owner and how I got started. This progressed to my experience of working with my father in law, which turned out to be much harder than expected. The discussion lead us down the path of, should you or shouldn’t you work with family and the difficulties that you may encounter.
The MaxMyProfit Brand
We then discussed in length about MaxMyProfit and how it came to be. One thing we spoke about was having a bricks and mortar business and how we wanted to impart, what I like to call, ‘The Disney Land Experience’ to business owners that visit. It is important for us to create an environment where people feel important and can come get coached and get things done.
Ninja Marketing Strategy
I then parted with Timbo and his listeners, what Tim named the ‘Ninja Marketing Strategy’, which is that of running Free Seminars. Now these aren’t seminars that people pay for or seminars in which we are going to be hard selling to the attendees either. During these seminars we educate people about an aspect of their business, it might be sales, and we impart some of our knowledge to them. It the attendees like what they hear they then come and speak with us and find out more about how we could possibly help them.
This is a marketing ploy that I and Timbo believe any business owner can pick up on and use to help promote their business to a new audience. All you need is a topic, a room, time and date and you are ready to move forward. During the free seminar, simply supply people with lots of great content that is associated with your business by giving away lots of great advice and things that they can go away and implement. Afterwards, either straight away or sometime later, you may get people eager to do business with you and by your product or service.
However there are some blockages with the word FREE which we discuss during the interview. Things like the fear of the word Free that people have and the amount of people that drop off and don’t turn up due to it being free.
So much more
Besides all of this we also fit in other little discussions… Things like; under promising and over deliver to wow your clients. The other big thing that we had a chat about was the importance about building rapport with people and the pros and cons surrounding that.

Again I had a great time delving deeper into the world marketing with Timbo. The interview went in a couple of different directions and I think and hope that it will help motivate small business owners who will get a lot out of it.
