The Relevance of Core Values in Your Business

The Relevance of Core Values in Your Business

It's not uncommon for entrepreneurs to face an early burnout, feel constantly tired, overwhelmed, stressed and depressed; even when they feel that they have tackled the worst, handled all the trials and tribulations that come with setting up a new business and reached a point where they are fairly successful and financially better off than what they were when they started out.

The business landscape is dynamic and there is rarely ever anything stagnant about it. Business demands and market conditions can change, there could be rules and regulations that change or there could be some major upheaval; and there may be days on which you feel that there has to be a better way to live.

The definition of success

Most entrepreneurs feel that building a business and turning it into a success only include things like business expansion, more sales and of course higher profits etc. While all of these are definitely parameters you measure your success on, there are certain other aspects to business development that are a little less tangible, but equally important.

The aspects of Purpose, Core Values and Passion are the cornerstones of any business development process; even people that keep these in sight when they first step into the entrepreneurial space get side-tracked later; they tend to think that success is all about money and forget these important aspects that are directly related with your core values.

If at some point of time you feel that despite everything there is something missing, you should focus on these three aspects of Passion, Purpose and Core Values. This will help you take a broader view of your business setting and help you see the bigger picture more clearly. In turn, you will be able to build a business that reflects your core values.

Some pointers

This unique process underpins creating a sustainable and healthy business that means something to you on a much deeper level. Here are some steps to follow:

  • During this exercise, make sure you are away from your office, that you are outside your comfort zone and be truthful with yourself.
  • Ask what you really don't want in your life. This need not always be business-related. Write down all the things that are causing stress, overall dissatisfaction and frustration and anger. They needn't be related to your business directly; but when you are dissatisfied with the manner in which your business is running, that can have an impact on all avenues of your life and vice versa. However, if you are able to pinpoint what's bothering you, you can then work to find a suitable solution.
  • Understanding what you really want for yourself will help you build a business that actually supports it.
  • Learn to prioritise things and even though some things don't seem tangible in the present day, they might help you achieve your business goals in the near future. So if you feel you are constantly pressed for time and can't make any time for your family, hire a few more people to handle some tasks at your office. While this may not be fit perfectly into your budget right now, if you find a way to make it work, that can take away some of the stress and frustration that you are experiencing.

It's all about being the change

The minute you realise that most of the challenging situations you have faced were because you weren't very clear about your Vision, Purpose, and Core Values, it will help you make the changes you need to get back on track.
