Tradies are typically good at what they do, and this can lead to a tradie spending all their time working in the business rather than on the business. This is why business coaching for tradies is an important step for business growth and success.
If you’re a Tradie looking for business coaching to help you grow your trades business, here’s 7 questions to ask yourself to see if you’re ready.
Are you spending more than 80% of your time working on the tools? If you’re serious about growing your business, you’ll need some time to work ‘on’ the business. You’ll need time to develop your action plan and then work on the strategies to turn your goals into reality. You should spend at least 20% of your time working ‘on’ the business.
Does your trades business rely on you? If your business relies on you doing all the work, you’ll never be able to take a break or get off the tools without it affecting your income. You’ll need to build a team and develop systems and KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) to keep them on track.
Do you find yourself running out of time to get everything done? Nobody enjoys doing quotes and invoices at night. Working long hours will affect your productivity and even worse, could affect your relationships. If you’re finding that you have no time during normal business hours to get everything done, you need to work on making yourself and your business more efficient.
Do you have a plan? You would never jump in your car and then decide where to drive, you’ll always decide on a destination before you jump in. Your business is no different. You should know what your destination is. Your plan should include sales and profitability targets, and a clear idea of how you’ll reach these.
Are you making money? Going into business for yourself can be tricky and a lot of Tradies we meet are busy, but they’re not making the money they should be. It’s no good busting your gut working really hard if all you do is make an average wage. Running a business comes with risks and challenges and should reward you accordingly for taking these risks.
Do you have a great team you can trust and rely on? The only way you’ll build a successful trades business is to recruit the right people. If you don’t feel like you can trust and rely on your team, then it’s going to be hard for you to delegate tasks with confidence. You’ll need to learn how to find and hire great tradies and other team members.
Are you happy? Your business is a large part of your life, and it’s important that you enjoy running your trades business. If you get up each morning and dread having to ‘go to work’ then you need to make a change. If nothing changes… nothing changes.
