Most millennials care very little about conventional global brands and that’s impacting the way marketers develop advertising and marketing strategies for their client’s businesses. Brands that were adored by Generation X don’t necessarily resonate well with the millennials.
Millennials look at brands with differently and whilst they are aware of brand names that Gen X loved, they don’t necessarily have the same emotion towards their equity or heritage.
Many marketers that have helped companies target Generation X now find it extremely challenging to create impactful marketing strategies for their small business clients. Business owners are constantly challenged with the evolving markets and are looking for ways to attract Millennials.
Here are some tips that will help you target Millennials:
#1 Brand Royalty – not what it used to be
There was a time when customers became loyal to a certain brand much quicker. If you were an Apple fan, that is what you would buy. If you liked Coke, you would order water if only Pepsi was available.
Today’s generation harbours no such undying brand loyalty. Which is why if you want to build a strategy around Marketing to them, you must think outside the box and work out ways to alter your old strategies and work on new ones.
Millennials don’t move into default mode when it comes to brand loyalty. They rely on customer experience. It’s all about engagement and how you treat a customer when they walk into your store or the journey they take when purchasing online. That is what people talk about more than the product itself. They will move away from a brand if they feel the company hasn’t been able to live up to their expectations.
#2 Think outside the box
Millennials look for businesses that think outside the box and are flexible with customer needs. As a business owner, you need to make sure that you don’t give a customer a negative experience. People, especially Millennials focus on what went wrong rather than praise what went right.
Not only is it important for you to chalk out a plan of action when the negative hits, it is equally important to make sure that never happens. Focus on keeping your systems updated. Implement a plan that will engage this generation, the generation of Social Media and forward thinkers.
#3 Let your brand make an impact
If you are driven purely by profit, your customers are going to notice – and they aren’t going to be impressed. Millennials are more focussed on what you stand for and the purpose your brand has in this world rather than the product itself.
They are more interested in seeing what you are doing to reduce your carbon footprint, give back to the communities and reduce poverty. Of course, your business doesn’t have to be all about charity and donations. But they need to be convinced that your brand and company adds some value to people’s lives; that is when the millennials will appreciate you more and be loyal to your brand.
Maxmyprofit, for example, is a part of the B1G1 movement. Every time you purchase a product or when we coach and train you and your team, we contribute to a project on your behalf. In other words, while you take care of your team and business, you are helping other women, men and children around the world enjoy simple necessities for a better life. It really is that simple!
#4 Engagement
Stay up to date with current news. Millennials are all about engagement and if they are a part of your community, whether its Facebook or LinkedIn, they like to hear your stand on political and social issues and take part.
An example would be a post we did recently on the Sydney Strike last week.
These are the things that will separate you from your competitors. Build your advertising and marketing strategies around these concepts and try to do things differently, be vocal, and transparent. This will help you build your fan base so to speak.
